Turkish American Association of Alabama has organized celebration of 88th Year of the Turkish Republic. As tradition by now, young generation put off the candle of the cake.
Turkish American Heritage Day and The people of Turkey on Turkish Republic Day on October 29 Resolution have been presented to Turkish Community by Mr. Michael Ciamarra.
BIC recently had a workshop on Turkey on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Homewood Middle School. Guests were welcomed by Iris Gross, the Executive Director of BIC. A discussion including the Ottoman/Turkish influence on America, Turkey and its neighbors, an overview of Turkish history and geography, and Turkish cuisine was held. The TAAA prepared several examples of food from the Turkish cuisine for lunch. Aynur Ates-Vloon, President of the TAAA, presented a power point on the Turkish delicacies. Orrin Ford also gave a presentation about the development of modern Turkey.
On November 27, 2010, BIC held a book signing and discussion with Sheila Kaufman for her book, The Turkish Cookbook: Regional Recipes and Stories. The book signing was a part of the yearlong event “Spotlight on Turkey” by the Birmingham International Center. A big thank you goes to Aynur Ates-Vloon, President of the TAAA, who provided samples from the cookbook for guests as a taste test.
BIC hosted a Turkish Rug Sale from December 5-11 as part of “Spotlight on Turkey.” A part of the proceeds will benefit the center’s educational programs. The ottoman rug’s owner, Calal Voral brought 200 handmade, high quality Turkish rugs made of pure silk and wool. The TAAA participated in the one of a kind event.
On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, the Birmingham International Center held an International Women’s Day celebration called “The Ties That Bind.”The Woman of Consequence Awards Luncheon honored Aynur Ates-Vloon, President of the TAAA and Bonnie Joy Kaslan, Honorary Consul General for Turkey in San Francisco. Later that day, an outdoor Turkish Bazaar including several well-known vendors gave guests a sense of Turkish culture. The celebration also included lunch.
